GIF
GIF is an older format limited to 256 colours per image. It is still popular for simple animations and reaction images, but static GIFs used as graphics are usually much larger than necessary, and the small palette can cause banding and rough edges.
WebP
WebP, created by Google, supports full 24-bit colour, transparency and modern compression. For a still picture taken from a GIF it is almost always smaller and sharper, and every current browser can display it.
Why Convert GIF to WebP?

Convert GIF to WebP Online for Free
In short: this tool converts GIF images to WebP directly in your browser. It saves one still frame from each GIF, keeps transparency if you want it, lets you choose the quality, handles many files at once and never uploads anything. The result is usually smaller and sharper than the original GIF.
How to convert GIF to WebP
- Drop your GIF images on the page, or click to choose them from your device.
- Set the quality with the slider. 80 is a good starting point for most images.
- Leave Preserve transparency on if your image has a see-through background.
- Click Convert, check the size saving shown for each file, then download your WebP images.
Important: still frame, not animation
This converter turns each GIF into a single WebP still image. It does not keep the moving animation. That makes it a good fit for static GIFs, logos, icons and graphics, or when you only need one frame as a picture. If the movement matters, keep your original GIF file.
Why use WebP instead of GIF?
GIF is limited to 256 colours and uses old compression, so a still GIF is often far larger than the same picture saved as WebP. WebP supports full colour and transparency with much more efficient compression. On a page with many images, that means seconds saved, lower hosting bandwidth and a better Largest Contentful Paint score. Google PageSpeed Insights even lists serving images in next-gen formats such as WebP as a recommendation.
What GIF to WebP is best for
- Static GIF logos, icons and buttons used on websites.
- Old GIF graphics that look rough or banded and need a cleaner copy.
- Pulling a single frame out of a GIF to use as a thumbnail or preview.
- Cutting image weight on blogs and stores that still use GIF files.
- Email and social graphics where small files send and load faster.
Choosing the right quality
The slider trades file size for detail. Around 80 is a balanced default that looks the same to most eyes. Use 90 or more for text, thin lines and pixel art, where small flaws show up easily. Go down to 60-75 when the smallest file matters most. Keep your original GIF as the master copy, because WebP at lower quality is lossy and cannot restore what was removed.
Your images stay on your device
Many converters upload your files to a server. This one does not. The conversion runs in your browser with your own processor, so there is no waiting for an upload and no copy of your image anywhere else. That makes it a safe choice for client work and private images.
Need a different format?
For graphics with transparency use PNG to WebP, and for photos use JPG to WebP. Need to open a WebP file in older software or an editor? Convert it back with WebP to PNG to keep transparency, or WebP to JPG for the widest compatibility. You can also convert iPhone photos with HEIC to WebP and HEIC to JPG. Good to know
- WebP is shown by Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari 14 or newer, on desktop and mobile.
- Animated GIFs are converted as one still frame, not as an animation.
- PNG and JPG files are accepted as well as GIF.
- Results depend on the image: flat graphics shrink the most, detailed pictures less.
اکثر پوچھے گئے سوالات (FAQs)
How do I convert GIF to WebP?
Drop your GIF files onto the page or click to browse, choose a quality level, and click Convert. When it finishes, download each WebP file. You can add several images at once.
Does this keep the GIF animation?
No. This tool converts a single still frame from each GIF into a WebP image, which is ideal for logos, graphics and static GIFs. If you need to keep the moving animation, keep your original GIF file.
Why convert a GIF to WebP?
GIF is limited to 256 colours and compresses poorly, so even a simple still GIF is often much larger than it needs to be. WebP supports full colour and modern compression, so the same picture is usually sharper and smaller, which helps pages load faster.
Does GIF to WebP keep the transparent background?
Yes. Keep Preserve transparency switched on and see-through areas of your GIF stay transparent in the WebP file. Switch it off if you want transparent pixels filled with a solid white background instead.
What quality setting should I choose?
Start with 80, the default. It gives a large size reduction with no visible change for most images. Use 90 or higher for sharp text, thin lines and pixel art, and 60 to 75 when the smallest possible file matters more than perfect detail.
How much smaller will my WebP file be?
It depends on the picture, but still GIFs often shrink a lot because GIF compression is old and inefficient for images. The tool shows the exact saving for every file, so you can see the result before you download.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using your own device. Your GIF files are never sent to DailyOnWeb or anyone else, so private images stay private.
Can I convert many GIF files at once?
Yes. Select or drop several files together and they are converted in one go. Each result has its own download button. Very large batches depend on your device memory, so split them if your browser slows down.
Do all browsers support WebP?
Yes, all current browsers display WebP: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari 14 or newer, on desktop and mobile. Only very old software cannot open it, and for those cases you can convert WebP back to PNG or JPG.
Can I convert PNG or JPG files too?
Yes. Besides GIF, this tool accepts PNG and JPG images. For dedicated tools, try PNG to WebP for graphics or JPG to WebP for photos.
Will converting to WebP improve my SEO?
It can help indirectly. Smaller images load faster, which improves Core Web Vitals such as Largest Contentful Paint, and Google PageSpeed Insights recommends next-gen formats like WebP. Faster pages are better for visitors and for search.
Is it free? Is there a file limit or watermark?
It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark. There is no fixed file-size limit from us. The practical limit is the memory of your device.
