How to Calculate E-Commerce Profit Margins & Sales Tax

This profit margin calculator is built for online sellers on Amazon, Shopify, WooCommerce, Etsy, and dropshipping stores who need to price products correctly the first time. Enter your cost per item, desired profit margin, platform or payment processing fee, sales tax or VAT rate, and shipping cost — the calculator instantly works backward to find the exact selling price that hits your target margin after fees and tax are accounted for, so you never accidentally underprice a product and eat into your profit.

Net Profit Formula: Net Profit = Selling Price − (Item Cost + Shipping + Platform Fees). Because platform fees and desired margin are both percentages of the final selling price, the calculator solves for selling price using: Selling Price = (Item Cost + Shipping) ÷ (1 − Fee % − Margin %). Tax is then added on top of that price to produce your final listing price.

Profit Margin vs. Markup

Sellers often confuse margin and markup, and mixing them up is one of the most common e-commerce pricing mistakes. Profit margin is profit expressed as a percentage of your selling price (Profit ÷ Selling Price), which is what this calculator uses by default since it reflects how much of every sales dollar you actually keep. Markup, by contrast, is profit expressed as a percentage of your cost (Profit ÷ Cost) — a 30% margin and a 30% markup produce very different selling prices, so always confirm which one a platform or spreadsheet is asking for before you price a product.

Tax-Exclusive Pricing

The listed price does not include tax; tax is calculated and added at checkout. Common for B2B and US sales tax on marketplaces like Amazon.

Tax-Inclusive Pricing

The listed "Final Listing Price" already includes tax/VAT baked in — the price customers see is the price they pay, common in EU and UK storefronts.
