How to Calculate Hours Worked

A time card calculator converts your clock-in and clock-out times into total hours worked. Start with the total elapsed time between clock-in and clock-out, then subtract any unpaid break time. For example, if you work from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a 1-hour unpaid break, the elapsed time is 8 hours, the unpaid break is 1 hour, and the hours worked equals 7 hours. Internally, this calculator works in minutes for precision, then formats the result as hours and minutes (or decimal hours) so you never see confusing rounding errors like 8.499999999 hours.

How to Calculate Overtime

Overtime is any time worked beyond a configured threshold, such as 40 hours per week or 8 hours per day. If your weekly total is 46 hours and your threshold is 40 hours, you have 40 regular hours and 6 overtime hours. Overtime pay is calculated by multiplying overtime hours by your hourly rate and by your overtime multiplier — for example, 3 overtime hours at $20 per hour with a 1.5× multiplier equals 3 × $20 × 1.5 = $90. Because overtime rules differ by country, state, industry, and employer, this calculator lets you configure your own threshold, multiplier, and calculation method (weekly, daily, or both) rather than assuming one jurisdiction's rules apply to everyone.

Decimal Hours & Rounding

Payroll systems often use decimal hours instead of hours and minutes. To convert, divide minutes by 60 — 30 minutes becomes 0.5 hours, and 45 minutes becomes 0.75 hours. This calculator also supports optional time rounding to the nearest 5, 10, 15, or 30 minutes, which is common in many payroll policies. Rounding is applied consistently to your total hours worked, and is clearly indicated in the settings so your actual clocked times are never silently altered without your knowledge.
